Carryout Chinese and DVDs
Monday, Aug. 30, 2004, 11:02 p.m.

QUESTION: Do you want egg rolls with that?

WHAT I LEARNED: Family time is family time.

My family should buy stock in our local Chinese carryout. The people at the restaurant recognize us from our phone number. They know our order by heart. They miss us when we dont call. Sometimes the delivery folks slip us extra coupons. Actually, since this weekend, we have been on a bit of a Chinese carryout and DVD-watching binge. We bought Season 1 of Monk on DVD this weekend and weve been zooming through the episodes. Its like electronic potato chips watch one and you must watch another. This creates a temporary family leisure time groove that we all enjoy. For an hour or so throughout the day we are all in sync eating Chinese food and marveling over Monk.

We need a peaceful corner of time to companionably watch TV while eating food that everyone can agree on, provides microwavable leftovers, and comes in cute little white and red boxes that are a welcome sight in the refrigerator whenever hunger strikes. This week has created enough excitement. My daughter started college this week. My husband is working tons of overtime this week. My son is having one last week of vacation bliss before hes back to school as well. With all the hustle and bustle of the household under these circumstances, these little moments of just relaxing together are most welcome.
