Family Vacation Fun Starts Now
Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004, 1103410202

QUESTION: Vacation?

WHAT I LEARNED: There's always sunshine somewhere!

No Friday Finds for me this week. I'm in Orlando, Florida with my family on a delightful holiday vacation!

We flew out yesterday and let me tell you that it was hell on wheels getting everything together for the trip. As usual, it's the mom who gets stuck doing all the last minute things while others have gone to bed earlier - happy in their dreams of a great vacation-a-rama (thanks to mom's great planning). It's all good though - as my son would say. I may have been finishing up work, holiday, and household chores until well into the night but in the end, all the tasks could be left behind as done or safely set aside until our return.

The day before we set out to Orlando started with an imminent tragedy - my daughter discovered that the calculator that she needed to talk her math final exam had been scooped up and taken to school by her brother. Potential meltdown alert. Mom calls high school and the kid delivers up the calculator. Good job, mom.

A few hours later, I am interrupted again. My daughter calls and asks - mom, did you remember to pay my spring tuition? It was due yesterday.

Me to daughter - did you remind me?

She is in the middle of taking finals. Another potential meltdown at hand. Indeed, we shortly discover that she had been bounced out off all the classes she had pre-registered for in November. The computer registration system is slow as molasses. Finally, she resorted to the old standby - phone registration. It worked like a charm. She got back into all her classes. Of course, I did have to pay the tuition in full less than 24 hours before going on vacation but still - Crisis 2 was deftly averted by mom and daughter teamwork.

So, here we are in Orlando, Florida. I am so looking forward to visiting all the different kingdoms of The Mouse. Last night we went to a favorite Orlando restaurant of ours - Tu Tu Tango Cafe. We love the atmosphere of the place - the artwork on the walls (and for sale), the great variety of appetizer dishes, fancy drinks, and fun desserts. Last night the entertainment included belly dancers. What more could you want?

Florida is perfect and beautiful today. My husband and son are down by the swimming pool playing pool of all things. My daughter is taking a nap after some maxi-shopping at the Premium Outlet Mall (which was indeed amazing - talk about bargains!).

I think I am going down to the pool myself.

I'm on vacation!
