Suntan Lotion Goes Banner
Wednesday, Jan. 05, 2005, 11:51 p.m.

QUESTION: Did you forget anything?

WHAT I LEARNED: Look before you leave.

The memory of the scent of classic Coppertone assails me thanks to the banner wizardry of spritopias, who created this retro summer fun banner for Suburban Island.

I once did one better than the Coppertone kid - divested myself of my swimsuit while splashing around in a wading pool when I was only a couple of years old. The sun, the pool, the fun. Do you remember being so young that you forgot whether you had your swimsuit on or not? I remember thinking I was forgetting something - but what? In my rush to answer my mother's summons to come inside I guess there wasn't time to do more than run through our backyard buck naked and ready for a good lunch. I think my mom was rather surprised as she had supplied me with a bathing suit shortly before.

Yes, I always was a Coppertone girl, even though I still burnt to a crisp when I sat out in the sun for more than 15 minutes at a time no matter how much suntan lotion I used. I couldn't resist the ads. We've come a long way, baby - with sunscreen and all - but there's still nothing like the smell of Coppertone on a summer's day.
