Dress Code
Monday, Aug. 25, 2003, 6:18 p.m.

QUESTION: What's with the shoe rules?

WHAT I LEARNED: School uniforms are a thing of beauty.

Today was the first day of school for my daugher. They usually wear uniforms but today was a wear-what-you-want-day. Well, kind of - they still have a pretty strict dress code and that means that nothing the average teenager has hanging in their closet is quite right.

This dress code created for my daughter, a sudden and somehow unanticipated dress for success crisis. It all revolved around not having the right shoes to go with the outfit she had carefully laid out in her tidy room the night before. Shoes it seemed are a key aspect of the schools dress code - as in no flip flops and no shoes without backs. It seems the shoe strictures had been forgotten in the wardrobe planning that had occurred the evening before.

Upon remembering the shoe rules and finding that her carefully selected outfit did not go with any of the possible shoe choices - a state of chaos inevitably ensued. Or so it seemed when I entered her room to find a scene beyond believing and my lovely daughter standing in the midst of it looking for something else to wear.

If this isn't an argument for school uniforms then I don't know what is.
