Hippies are disgusting. Don't give them money!

You always have such nice banners. Very ARTISTIC. Ditto what Sprit said :)

If they thought their art was so beautiful, why would they not want to share it with the world? I would say, "Money is my art, no one gets to spend it but the person who MAKES it."

Very well put. I tip my hat to you and put a virtual fiver into your virtual guitar case.

Well-spoken, my dear. You are always so thoughtful.

Clap Clap Clap Clap Clap Clap *STANDS UP* CLAP! CLAP! CLAP! CLAP! CLAP! CLAP! Wonderfully put! I always thought of home making as an art as well as motherhood.

You are very thoughtful and well written. I am envious. Because I'm pretty much just a slap-it-on-there kind of diarist with no real thought to it.

I think I was accosted by those same art-commune-hippies here in DC, and also made the mistake of making eye-contact. However, I did it in a squinty "Clint Eastwood" kind of way. When one of the filthy hippies sidled up to me, I quickly started questioning him on his politics, firing out every question before he had a chance to answer the last, while walking briskly. Even though I'm a democrat and not in favor of the war in Iraq, I took advantage of my crewcutted-beefy-redneck looks, and asked him if the commune supported the war. When he gave me the expectable answer I said, "Sorry. Can't help you." and that was that. Even though I'm a liberal and an artist, I hate freeloading hippies too...

I have no objection to someone making a living with their art, but I will not EVER give a handout to someone on a street corner. I've been homeless and seen my children go hungry, but I have NEVER EVER asked for handouts. You're more right than you realize. Some of those who are panhandling bring home four times what I make - and because of the way they obtain it, they pay no taxes. They contribute little or nothing to society. They are, despite their posing to the opposite, the ultimate irresponsible consumers.

Your entry reminded me of a long ago conversation with my ex-husband. He had NEVER paid child support, yet had the audacity to call me to ask for money...not a loan, a gift. When I asked him what he was doing for a living he replied that he was pan-handling, waiting for God to give him a musical career. I suggested (not very nicely, I'm afraid) that he stop waiting for God to give him a career and go get a JOB!

Close. They were staked out in front of Kramer Books on Dupont Circle. They picked the wrong guy...I totally believe in art for money. Nothing would make me happier than to get paid to draw all day...

Hear, hear! I have never seen the term elitist used in a more accurate fashion. I have had my share of 'artists' live with me as roommates(I'm a sucker for a sob story), and god forbid they work to pay any kind of rent or bills...it would interfere with their 'real work.' For a while it felt like I was running a halfway house for starving, lazy artists that don't actually produce any art.

Amen. That bit about loving their art too much to part with it, is SUCH a crock of bull. A true artist wants to share what they create with the world. Not hide it. Bunch of ignorant wannabes, I tell ya! But you put it so much more elequently ;o)

Hey, I've been looking all over for one of those t-shirts those kids were selling, did they say where the commune was located?

Christopias Spritopher - 2005-03-12 07:57:58
Chaos, can't you make your own?
-------------------------------
Jim - 2005-03-12 09:12:18
They can't bear to part with any of their works of art.... yeah, right... which probably means that they can't find anybody willing to have any of their so-called art.

Ok, the princess moment banner was very genius. It just was.
