I spent most of the pre-election weeks avoiding politics. I am not happy with the results of voting, but I hope I never slam anyone for disagreeing with me. The exception is when that disagreement results in someone being hurt, or in this case, killed. I do not pretend to understand everything that our president has done, nor do I pretend to be privy to everything that drove his choices while in office. But I am genuinely frightened at his re-election. It is not simply one man we're talking about. George Bush is representative of all Americans, whether or not we voted for him. His choices in office, whatever his original intent, are perceived worldwide as the actions of a power-monger and a madman. I hope that the perception changes. I hope that his chase brings results that will vindicate him, and through him, us.

Well put Radio Gurl, but I would also like to say (not in connection Ms. Radio) that no matter who you voted for, you are still a human who should be treated like one. Well stated, SI! Well stated.

Perhaps we should nominate you for consideration for Secretary of State. Of Diaryland at least... I agree with Spritopias...well stated. For one, I am extremely circumspect when discussing these issues face to face with people, but seem to lose inhibition in here. You give me pause to think.

oh thank you si, it needed to be said. i tend not to read entries that are political rants, and those that are continuing it wont be read anymore by me. the point here is, gwb is the pres, and we all have to live here, so we should all support him whether we want to or not. where is the UNITED in the US today?

Once again you've taken my breath away with your words. Not only are you a gifted writer, but entries like this prove that you are also a thoughtful (and thought provoking) person. I'm so glad that I can consider you a friend!

Amen, Amen, and Amen! This entry made me feel much better about taking the high road and not responding to some very hurtful and hateful comments that were made about me & the rest of middle America based solely on how we voted. You are both kind and intelligent. I wish more people realized that no matter how intelligent they perceive themselves, others will not value their opinions if they are served with hateful remarks and judgements. Quoting Paul: "Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not love, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal." 1 Corinthians 13:1

I was very careful to stay out of the line of fire. It's easy to spout words, but once out, they can never be taken back. I disagreed with some, but I just clicked the "X" and went on tho the next one. Thankfully, I have no apologies to express. And I too am not happy with the outcome of the election but as I stated in my own journal, Now is the time to band together as a nation, not stay divided. We cannot give anyone the impression that we do not stand united. The old addage, "Divide and conquer" is a scary one.

Wonderful entry! I had hoped people could come together after the election -- no matter who won -- but I have been horrified at some of the viscious hate-filled reactions I have been reading at so many sites. There are four voters resident in my house (myself, my wife, our two college age kids). We voted for four different candidates for president. (Bush, Kerry, Nader, and whoever was the Green Party candidate). I've not discussed the results with my eldest and his wife, but although I'm not quite sure how he voted (probably either Libertarian or for Kerry), I'm positive my daughter-in-law voted for Kerry. A disagreement over political candidates can certainly be boisterous, but there is no reason to resort to hate speech and ethnic slurs. And it raises the question of how someone can hope to persuade another to support a future candidate after so thoroughly insulting them now? Wish everyone could read your entry.

Hail to you. I certainly didn't mean to be rude, but I reread my diary looking to see where I might have gone horribly, insultingly awry, and I had to clarify that whole bitchslapping thing, with a nod in your direction for wisdom. I didn't mean people *should* be (b-s'd), I meant that was liable to be the reaction. I hope I have fixed that now. Anyway, I hope I never made you feel bad. I tried to bear you in mind and stay reasonable. I'm sorry if I didn't manage it. :( kd

Very nice post today. I have seen some very negative diaries, on both sides, since the election and it is nice to see one trying to bring people together. I know I was negative as well, so thanks for your comments about the election in my diary. When I mentioned the negatives in my diary, I was not specifically bashing those who voted for Bush, but was talking also about Propositions that were passed, or not passed, etc. However, you are very correct that it is important to respect all people, regardless of their political beliefs. I agree that we must now try to find a way to pull together and use the many different ideas from both parties to make the country better. I was just worried after the election that such a thing would not be possible- but I feel better about these things now and am remaining hopeful. *hugs*
