Ahhh. We've done the paintball hobby. I think, after a very intensive and expensive year, we are moving on. Of course, both boys are getting closer and closer to driving age which will mean different expenses. Oh well, I didn't have the kiddos to make money!

I play paintball a lot, and my advice is that the only thing your kid needs is a good pair of cammies (two different camo schemes break up the shape of the body better...i.e., different pants and shirt), a good pair of hiking boots (we don't want him slipping on the trail now do we?), a cup, nalgene bottles and pouches for extra ammo (nalgene bottles are basically indestructible water bottles made for bicyclists. If there's one thing that will win a paintball game, it's the players ability to keep up heavy, continuous, suppressing fire. Having extra ammo allows you to be liberal in this regard.), your own face mask, KNEE AND ELBOW PADS (makes low-crawling easier), and most importantly, $50 so you can rent a gun at the paintball site... They'll maintain their CO2 cannisters properly.

Also, a pair of nomex gloves are advised, as I always catch some poison ivy when I'm crawling around out here. Heavyweight Poly/Cotton blend fatigues probably offer a little more protection in that regard, although I find them too hot to wear in the summer.

AND...coolmax t-shirt and underwear. Doesn't retain sweat like cotton. Very helpful.

I played paintball a few times in my youth (don't laugh). All I had was a pair of sweats on under my cammies (it was cold and the sweats were also padding so it wouldn't hurt so much if some jerk shot me at pointblank range), a few extra cartridges of co2 and all the extra painballs I could carry. Oh - and goggles. I had a great time and rented the gun. If your kid wants to play regularly, I would advise buying a gun - the same kind the paintball field rents out, and one with a nice long feeder tube (that holds the paintballs). That's all I needed, and all you probably really need to provide, though I'm thinking the gloves are a good idea, too. And maybe a bandana. Anything else is pretty much icing and will be proper motivation for your child to mow more lawns during the summer. :) kd
