Maybe he's being passive-aggressive, continuing to do it "wrong" expecting you'll relieve him of this duty altogether. This is a common male practice! Dr. Phil even mentioned it on his show a few days ago! No advice for you, but you have my sympathies. That would drive me nuts.

I've even put up written directions. But of course, we all know men don't follow directions, so that was folly. I'm always baffled by how the male mind thinks Victoria's Secret underwear and Carhartt socks belong in the same washload. Or worse, kitchen towels. There is nothing worse than having your knickers smell like cooking oil!

oooohh I hate doing laundry especially socks. (shuddering) they are mysterious little buggers. I think they wander around or something. We are the lost sock household. I can put a whole load of (paired) socks into the wash, and com up with only halves. I am constantly buying new ones. My family just wanders around in the morning, confused, searching for socks (I kid you not)
