Battle Fatigue
Friday, May. 28, 2004, 9:29 a.m.

QUESTION: Work getting you down?

WHAT I LEARNED: I have too much to do and I'll never get it all done.

Do you suffer from job fatigue? How do you know? Heres how I know:

  • Working on Excel spreadsheet for an hour and then accidentally closing it without saving so that no alterative is possible except to totally recreate spreadsheet contents or fudge it and go home, and I go home;
  • Realizing that the investment in a venti latte still doesnt lift the veil of exhaustion that hangs over me;
  • Being so tired in the morning that 15 extra minutes of sleep seems well worth the annoyance of running late all day;
  • Writing my tasks on the back of random envelopes and other handy scraps of paper that disappear before I can transfer the information to my real to-do list and calendar, thereby greatly increasing the potential excitement of daily living;
  • Finding myself yelling at my youngest kid to stop distracting me with that annoying question about his schoolwork because mom is still preparing for a presentation and (for dramatic emphasis) will lose her job if not left alone to concentrate  time 11:30 PM;
  • Watching TV with laptop on lap so can type up administrative reports while relaxing;
  • Attending meetings and spend the whole time making lists of the other stuff I have to do when I get out of current meeting;
  • Looking forward to the kids' summer vacation more than the kids do;
  • Observing passing cicadas while sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic and realizing a bugs life has some advantages.
