Robins
Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003, 10:05 p.m.

Question: What's better than a bird in the hand?

What I Learned: Winter never lasts.

Yesterday was the tail end of the snowy week here. Snow was still piled up everywhere. It looked like winter was planting itself in my front yard forever. I always need some assurance that spring really is coming around again about this time of year. Usually I find it in a little crocus pushing up through the snow in the garden. Just some little reminder of warmer times to come that lifts up my heart a little towards that beautiful picture of spring and of course, my favorite time of the year - summer.

Yesterday however, the most amazing thing happened. You know how they talk about seeing the first robin of spring. Well, right outside my door, in the white plain of snow that stretched all the way down into the street in front of my house, was a whole flock of robins. Do robins flock? I don't know but there was a bunch of them. All cheerful and chirping and hopping around with those bright red breasts of theirs - like little flashes of a warm fire just skipping across that cold white snow.

It may be February but I do believe that spring really is around the corner and now I have the promise of these little robins to prove it.
