Streamers
Friday, Jan. 03, 2003, 11:53 p.m.

Question: Why is it that paper streamers stick together at the crucial moment but noisemakers never quit?

What I Learned: No matter what anyone says, sparkling cider is not the same as champagne.

I am finally recovering for all the New Years excitement. Being a mom at New Years Eve is a cross between being a high-stakes project manager, maximum-security prison warden, playoff referee, and shop steward.

The highlights were:

  • Looking at Vin Diesels arms in XXX.
  • Knocking back some pick champagne while nibbling Wow chips with guacamole, and ranch dip, and microwaved queso, while looking at the arms.
  • Keeping mentally agile by sorting though the clever ploys/requests of a teenager with wheels who feels that New Years Eve really translates to curfew, who me?
  • Procrastinating about my expense reports so that I wind up having to submit them at 11:00 p.m. to meet the December 31st deadline for the year 2002.

  • Tossing a few streamers across the furniture for a decorative touch about 11:30 p.m. only to find out that my husband mistook these festive colored twirls of paper for trash by 11:45 p.m. and promptly tossed them all out. Lucky for him I had more.
  • Cleaning crystal goblets for a New Years toast only to find them all filled with sparkling cider by mistake and slowly drizzling the content of each glass back into the cider bottle as the clock ticked towards the 11:50 p.m. mark.
  • Realizing the battery was dead on the camera at 11:55 p.m.
  • Finding out the noisemakers I bought didnt seem to make any noise, relieving me of the task of hiding them from my youngest by 12:05 a.m.

Now if that isnt a great start to the New Year, I dont know what is.
