Politically Incorrect Grocery Shopping
Sunday, Dec. 01, 2002, 11:38 p.m.
I learned something last night while having dinner with friends and friends of friends. It's a twist on the old adage: Never talk about religion or politics. Well, I walked away from yesterday evening with a new one for the list.
Never talk about grocery shopping with someone who right up front admits that they do all their shopping at their local health food store and/or fancy whole food franchise.
Especially never discuss the concept of cross-shopping or hybrid-buying. I made this mistake and was quickly and firmly taken to task for it.
What do I mean exactly?
Well, for instance - you know how sometimes you might buy those cute little clementines that you can't find anywhere else for almost $8 a package at the upscale healthy-eats store or that really fabulous sourdough bread? And you know how later on that week, or even that very same day, you might find yourself browsing the familiar aisles of your standard grocery store for Cheez-Its and Tuna Helper?
Just don't say you do that.
You don't have to take my advice on this but trust me - you'll never be able to clearly defend the Cheez-It purchases, or for that matter your use of any of the handy Helper (tuna, hamburger, chicken) family of products, to these individuals.
